Multi-camera: Aesthetic & Practical

Multi-camera
Multi-camera is filming with more than one camera. Filming with more than one camera has many advantages. Five main advantages is coverage, spontaneity, speed, continuity and editing. Coverage for multi camera is much more easier as you are able to cover many shots from different angles. Being spontaneity is easy with multi camera because you are able to pick up different shots with variety of shot types. Speed is another advantage of filming with multi-camera because it is quicker and less hassle. Less hassle as you do not need to move the camera as it is in  a fixed or near fixed position. continuity of multi camera is an advantage because, you are able to use other shots if a certain shot did not look best in its place. Lastly editing is easier as you have different varieties of shots. There is two different types of multi-camera techniques. The two different factors are practical and aesthetic.
Practical factors are that which help make it easier or that which impossible to do with any other method. This factor allows you to cover a wide range of space which has to be done with more than one camera. Filming with more than one camera means being able to cover a range of factors which is not possible with one camera.
Aesthetic factors are that which make it much more visually appealing by making it look good with different varieties of shots. The main difference is that practical is filming what is shown and aesthetic is factors which make it visually appealing to the audience.

Live Events-Sports

Live event such as sport will always be filmed multi-camera. This technique best suits events which are live because, to film a live event with a single camera will not be possible as the person filming will not be able to cover all the areas in an event. Filming live events multi-camera allows the viewers to see every part of the event without missing any shots for example reaction shots.

An example for live sport would be football. An event like live football has to be filmed multi-camera so the viewers are able to experience what is happening live at the match. This means all the shots from showing the reaction to each side of the match must be shown. The shots filmed will vary from all sorts such as long shots, mid shots, close ups etc.

The first shot 0.03 seconds which is shown at the beginning of the match is a shot which shows the teams coming on to the pitch. This shot allows the viewers to see which two teams are playing. At 0.06 seconds the shot changes to a mid shot of the backs of the players as it allows the viewers to see who is coming on to the pitch.

At 0.03 seconds we see a shot of the whole pitch which allows the viewers to see the whole pitch and allows them to see which team is playing on which side. This shot is an establishing shot as it is representing the match and allowing the viewers to be able to see and know what is happening in the match.

At 4.08 seconds the shot was a long shot of the pitch which changes to a close-up of both the players with the ball at 4.09 seconds. These two camera shots allows the viewers to be engaged and entertained. The more varieties of shots the more the audience can interact with the match.

At 4.13 seconds we see the ball passed over across the pitch and the camera follows this movement. The camera style changes which allows the audience and viewers to catch every aspect and motion of the game. When the ball is next kicked at 4.16 seconds it goes over to the other side of the pitch which the camera picks up. By having multiple cameras it enables and makes sure that the viewers and audience do not miss out on anything in the match.

An example of when a team scores a goal is at 47.17 seconds. All the players are all together and they are celebrating because they scored a goal. At 47.18 seconds the camera shot changes to the crowd and audience. This effects and impacts the viewers as it allows them to see the emotions and feeling which the crowd feel while watching the match.

At the end of this match 2.34.05 seconds because it was the champions league the winning team all got a medal and they also had the trophy. This shot allows the audience to see the reaction shot and also the feelings and emotions which the players are feeling along with the fans.

Chat show
Chat shows also use multi-camera as a technique of filming and having all the shots so that the viewers are able to see what is happening and that to with variety of shots. An example of a chat show would be Top gear. Top gear is a chat show were the presenter interview people and have conversation about cars. The whole show is about cars.

At the beginning of the show at 0.01 seconds the first camera language is a slide in to the presenter. This type of camera language allows the viewers to engage with the presenter, it also keeps the audience entertained.

At 0.03 seconds the camera slides away from the presenter on to the Mazda which the presenter is walking towards. This type of camera language allows the viewers to acknowledge what is happening.

The shot 0.05 seconds is a long shot where you can see the presenter and the audience at the back. This shot allows the viewers to see the reaction of the audience and also allows the viewers to experience the feeling of seeing the chat show live.
From 0.15 to 0.28 seconds shots of the Mazda are shown. For example at 0.22 seconds the shot is of the front part of the car. This affects the audience as they are able to see the car and by showing different parts of the car, the audience have better understanding of what has been told to them. There were many aesthetic effect which was used in this show. For example at 0.52 seconds a slide from the bottom to the top effect was used which adds interest and different styles of techniques.

This chat show is about cars. At 1.06 seconds the presenter is describing the car. He includes the advantages and disadvantages of the car. The presenter also makes sure he talks about what is good and bad of the car. For example 1.26 seconds he mentions what's good about the car as they fit in  both the ideas about having the car doors a specific way.

An example of an aesthetic style would be the different type of shots and camera angle chosen to show the car. Having different shots and camera angles allows the audience and viewers to be engaged and entertained rather than watching it without effects. Also at 1.52 seconds the shot is of the presenter driving the car. In this shot the presenter also mentions the different factors which are good within the car and also the factors which are not so good.

Lastly at 5.13 seconds when the presenter is having a standing up conversation about the car. This scene allows the audience and viewers to be engaged as it has been portrayed as two people having a conversation. This also sets the mood of what they are talking about. By having the presenter talking about the car is allows the audience and viewers to overall understand the concept of the car and the advantages and disadvantages of the car.

Game show
This genre would use multi-camera as it is important to get all the actions. This show is very unexpected and anything can happen at anytime which means having more than one camera is necessary. By having more than one camera you are able to catch all the actions and reactions of the scene. An example of a game show would be The cube.

At the beginning of the show 0.01 seconds the viewers first see a shot of the cube which then cuts to a shot with the presenter and a contestant.

At the beginning of the cube for every episode they show scenes from old episodes which build up to the current episode. For example in this episode at 0.05 seconds we see old episodes of different tasks.

From the beginning till 0.47 seconds there was variety of shots which were shown from long shots, mid shots and also close up of reactions.
an example of an audience reaction shot would be 0.12 and 0.13 seconds.

At 0.52 seconds the presenter is first shown. The camera language is unique as it first starts from the back of the presenter to the front of the presenter. This camera language keeps the audience entertained as the audience don't see the presenter straight away. From 0.52 seconds to 1.09 seconds the presenter is introducing the show and as the presenter is talking the camera is coming towards the presenter. This effect engages the audience to interact with the presenter.

Once the presenter has finished introducing the show, he then calls in then contestant. At 1.10 seconds the camera language pans in from the right on to the contestant. From this shot it cuts to a shot of a long shot of the contestant coming in at 1.11 seconds.

When the game starts at 2.08 seconds a lady which is presented to explain the game shows the game. For example she explains the rules of the games which allows the contest to know what they have to do. In order to keep the audience entertained a variety of shots is displayed from different angles to different camera languages.

An example of were the audience are engaged and entertained through the game is at 20.30 seconds, when the contestant is in the game again. and is playing the family members are tensed. This is shown at 22.37 when his girlfriend covers her mouth. This action shot allows the audience and viewers to feel the tension. When the contestant is almost about to get through the game but misses by a bit everyone including the contestant are disheartened.

At the end of the game at 30.58 seconds when the contestant goes home with the money the audience present wave and cheer for the contestant. This enables the audience and viewers not present to feel the emotion and feelings which the audience present are feeling. This is also another way to represent the emotions which the audience felt. It allows the viewers at home to engage with the show and manage the overall judgment of the game which they conclude after watching every aspect of the match.

Live studio
Live studio is also another genre which uses multi-camera as a camera technique. An example of a live studio is Britain's got talent. This show is a live studio where contestants perform and they have judges alongside audience.

At 0.08 seconds we first see shot of one of the judges. This starts with tension as the audience get to see the reaction of the judge which allows the judgment to be clear.

At 0.09 seconds its a high shot were the viewers see the back of the judges. The camera language then changes to zooming in at a slow pace at 0.13 seconds. At 0.15 seconds its a long shot of the performance allowing the viewers to see a full shot of the performance.

From 0.15 seconds to 0.35 seconds it was on the performance and the shot was a long shot of the performance. However at 0.36 seconds it cuts to one of the judges as this allows the viewers to see the reaction of the judge. Reaction shots are very important and also necessary as they allow the viewers to make a judgment about what they are seeing. Also having reaction shots allows the viewers to engage and also makes it live for the viewers who are not present. Straight after the reaction shot at 0.37 seconds it cuts back to the performance showing the contestants performing. The reason why a live studio has to be filmed multi-camera is so that the camera does not miss out any key scenes. If this was not filmed multi-camera it will literally be impossible to film every shot and also show the reaction and audience shots. By having this filmed multi-camera it allows the viewers to see everything as the audience get to see in the studio.

A shot where the audience is shown is at 0.53 seconds. In this shot we see two people and how they react to the scene. From this shot it allows the viewers to see the reaction shot of people who are viewing this performance live. At 0.54 seconds its a long high angle shot of one part of the studio. It is important to have a variety of shots so that the audience and viewers are engaged and kept entertained.

Another shot where we see another judges reaction is at 1.25 seconds. In this shot we get to see the judge and how she reacts to the performance. In this shot the judge is smiling which indicates that she is happy with the performance.  However, at 1.39 seconds there is another shot of a judge and their reaction is different to the first judge. This judge has more of a serious face which can indicate that he is concentrating or he is serious and trying to focus on the performance.

At the end of the performance at 3.20 seconds there is a shot of a person from the audience crying and wiping her tears. This shot is an important shot as it allows viewers to see how the performance ha impacted those who were viewing it live. This shot also allows the viewers to engage and understand the feelings and emotions other people go through while viewing such performances.

Public event

An example of a public event would be prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding ceremony.
This is a public event where people from all over come to see the wedding take place. The clip i have chosen to analyse is the exchanging the vows section.

At the beginning from 0.01 seconds to 0.11 seconds its a mid shot with the people in the background. Straight away at 0.12 seconds it changes to a close up of both of them facing the priest.
At 0.22 seconds the camera angle changes to the right side of Kate Middleton when prince William
says 'I do'. It then changes to a mid shot of the people in the background.

The effect of this is so that the audience who are not present get to see every aspect of the wedding and by having different shots it allows them to feel apart of the ceremony. When prince William starts with the vow at 1.02 seconds the camera angle is on the side to show his face. however straight after at 1.05 seconds the camera angle is to Kate Middleton's face, although its a mid shot the camera is faced at her. This allows the public to see how she reacts and also her expressions are shown.

Similarly when it is Kate's turn to return the vows back to William the camera angle starts at her and thereafter faces him. At 1.44 seconds when she starts the vow by saying her name the camera is on the side of her showing her face. Thereafter at 1.45 seconds the camera is facing towards the side of prince William's as we are able to see his face and expressions. It is very important to show different aspects and techniques so that the audience do not get bored. It is also important that every corner and minute of the event is filmed so that the audience who are not present are able to view this and see what happens.

Finally at 2.46 seconds the camera is focused on the hands and this allows the audience to see every part of the event. This is one of the main part of the event as the ring signifies their marriage which is why it is an important shot. This allows the audience to see the the emotions and feelings which they both feel as they exchange vows and get married.

Magazine show

An example of magazine show is this program on BBC called 'The one show'. This genre is very similar to a chat show as someone comes to the show and is interviewed by the presenter. The difference is that a magazine show has much more entertaining and varieties of shots.

At the beginning of the show the presenter introduces the guest who is 'Gary Barlow' at 0.06 seconds. At 0.19 seconds when the presenters point at the guest and he walks in the camera switches from the presenters to the guest. Thereafter at 0.22 seconds its a close up of the guest walking towards the stage.

At 1.20 seconds we see an audience which is present in this magazine show. Having this shot allows the viewers to see the emotions and feeling the people present are feeling. It also enables the viewers to see whether the audience there are engaged with the guest and how they are connected.

There are many reasons as to why a magazine show has to be shot multi camera. One of the practical reasons is so that every aspect and coverage of the scenes is shown that to without missing out any scenes. By having this filmed multi-camera it enables the audience and viewers to feel engaged and also entertained.

There are many aesthetic reasons as to why this program is engaging to the audience. The varieties of shot allows the audience to connect with the show. However the visual style and mode of address such as the atmosphere enables the audience to connect with the show. For example at 7.16 seconds the camera shot is a close up of the guest. This type of style allows the audience and viewers to see the facial expression of the guest and how he reacts to what has been told to him. It also allows the audience to engage and connect with the guest member present.

Talent show

An example of talent show is 'The voice'. This program is to do with those who sing as a talent. The contestants have to sing and judges have to approve of their singing by either choosing them or rejecting them.

This show first starts with contestant singing. At 0.16 seconds when the contestant is singing the camera is facing the contestant however the judge is also visible in the shot. The affect of this shot is that the viewers are able to see the judges expression and their reaction to hearing the voice.

At 0.27 seconds the shot is of another judge and in this shot it is only the judge. This shot allows the audience and viewers to understand what the judge is thinking about the contestant as to weather he likes the singing or doesn't. At 0.29 seconds the judge looks at the other judge sat beside him and in between the audience and viewers can see the contestant singing. This impacts the audience and viewers in a positive manner as it allows them to make a judgment about what is happening on the stage with the contestant.

When the judge approves of the singing they must press the buzzer and then their chair will turn so that they are facing the contestant singing. At 0.38 seconds the first judge presses the buzzer and his chair turns towards the singer. As soon as the judge turns around the crowd cheer louder. This impacts the viewers as it encourages them to see what happens further as well as keeps them entertained.

At the end once the contestant is done singing and sees all the judges have approved it makes the atmosphere much more lively. For example at 1.50 seconds the contestant is covering her face as she is shocked as to how she has gone through. This shot shows her emotion of being happy, content as well as shocked. This type of shot allows the audience to feel the emotion which the contestant is feeling.
